Mission
El Centro Comunal Latino (CCL/El Centro) is a grassroots, community‑based organization that provides a safe, welcoming, and accessible space for Latino community members—especially Spanish speakers—to access information, connect with resources, and gather for community events.
El Centro also fosters communication and mutual understanding between service providers and Latino residents, supporting integration and encouraging active participation in the greater Bloomington community.
Our History
1999
University and community women come together to discuss the needs of Bloomington’s growing Latino immigrant population. These conversations lead to the creation of La Central Latina, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Latino integration.
2001
Latino residents and representatives from city government, public education, Latino organizations, religious institutions, and social service agencies identify the need for a Latino community center as their highest priority. This vision results in the founding of El Centro Comunal Latino, whose first Board of Directors takes office in 2003.
2003
By the end of the year, La Central Latina, Inc. and El Centro Comunal Latino merge. La Central continues its work under the assumed business name El Centro Comunal Latino.
2008
El Centro receives its first grant funding from the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, allowing it to support and educate the Latino community on critical health issues. This funding strengthens continuity of services through paid staff and office space at the Monroe County Public Library in downtown Bloomington.
2020
The Monroe County Public Library generously offers El Centro expanded office and program space, significantly increasing capacity to serve the area’s growing Latino population.
2020–2022
During the COVID‑19 pandemic, El Centro staff and board members secure grants and community donations to help Latino residents cover rent, utilities, and other essential expenses when many are unable to work from home.
Present Day
El Centro remains committed to its mission of supporting Latino residents by providing information, guidance on rights and responsibilities, and assistance navigating local resources and service providers..
